We Are Yuchengco
The Yuchengco Center, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit think tank hosted by De La Salle University and sponsored by the Yuchengco Group of Companies. The Center’s Mission is to be a significant thought leader on the Sustainable Development Goals and is thus dedicated to the research and expansion of globalization, regional security, foreign relations, governance, democratization, and human security.
Our History
The Center was the realization of a common dream of three visionary Filipinos, namely former Yuchengco Group of Companies Chairman Alfonso Yuchengco, Jr., former De La Salle University President Br. Andrew Gonzalez, and professor emeritus Dr. Wilfrido Villacorta.
Inaugurated on August 29, 1994 as the ‘Yuchengco Institute of Philippines-Japan Relations', the Center was initially focused on the growing relationship between the Philippines and Japan.
In 1997, the Board of Trustees renamed it ‘Yuchengco Center for East Asia’ to reflect the expansion of its concerns to Northeast and Southeast Asia, including the relationship of the Philippines with China.
In 2002, the Board shortened its name to ‘Yuchengco Center, Inc.’ to signify a shift towards a broader perspective that is more issue-oriented and policy-focused. It continues to maintain a distinct interest in East Asia, particularly the Philippines, as a geopolitical priority.
Today, the Center operates as a think tank in support of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the principal target of eliminating extreme poverty (SDG 1), while supporting the achievement of five other SDGs directly related to it in the Philippines’ particular context.
Yuchengco Center's Institutional Goals are:
- to enhance its leadership in policy advocacy through research, conferences, and other activities that deal with social, economic and political issues in the Asian region;
- to expand the thematic areas by taking a proactive stance in addressing timely and emerging policy concerns;
- to establish interactive connections with national and international agencies for information dissemination and utilization; and
- to distill and disseminate policy implications of the Center’s researches and publications to delineate its contribution to knowledge, policy, and program development.
